Winter Movie Trifecta

Hey there cats and kittens!!! I know us Fangirls have been away for a while...give us a break, we were gettin' our Christmas time on! We are back though and geared up for the new year. I'm kicking it off with a review on a few movies I got to watch over the break.

Tron Legacy

Shiny!!!

So, I did not see the original Tron when I was a kid, which means I wasn't at the right age to wowed by the graphics. I saw the original....last year. I know, I'm a bad nerd!!!! It's not my fault that I grew up watching Andy Griffith and Antiques Road Show. I'm making up for missed moments now people....Anywho, I of course wasn't blown away by the original movie. Don't get me wrong, I loved the story, concept, and Jeff Bridges. I just didn't flip my shit over it.

Despite the fact that I wasn't in love with the original I was still really pumped about seeing Legacy. From my standpoint I was not let down by the film. If you go see it in 3D (which, for the first time, I recommend) the real world is all in 2D and then once Sam enters the grid it becomes 3D. This effect gives the grid that distinction it needs to pop out and grab you for the ride. It's also the FIRST time 3D has not bothered the crap out of me. Normally I walk away with a head-ache, the bridge of my nose feeling funny, and bitching about how all the action was blurry. This time the action was crisp and bright and the only thing I had to complain about was my nose.

I'm not going to go into the specifics of the plot. I will say that if you haven't watched the original before seeing Legacy you won't be lost. They did a decent job of catching you up. The only things that took me out of the film are as stated:

1. Cillian Murphy showed up in the real world for 15 secs as Edward Dillinger....they made look like a real douche bag too...WTF?

2. Jeff Bridges said "Man" a lot...like The Dude a lot. I can't remember, but does he talk like that in the original?

Besides that Tron Legacy was really fun and I recommend to anyone who's looking to escape for an evening.

Black Swan

Ahhhh the film that groups of guys everywhere have flocked to go see, for one reason only...the knowledge that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis make hot lesbian love to each other. I've never seen so many guys in one theater since The Expendables.

As I've said before, Director Darren Aronofsky is a director that's after my own heart...he does movies that are CRAZY...and visually stunning. I can't wait to see what he does with The Wolverine. Aronofsky doesn't stray from his usual in Black Swan. It's just as much mind and eye candy as his previous films. I liked, not loved, Black Swan. Don't get me wrong, the performances were incredible and I'll be surprised if Portman doesn't win the Oscar for her role. But if you're hoping that this film is going to have twists and turns and then knock you upside the head by the end, then you'll be disappointed. If you pay attention you're pretty much told from the beginning what's going to happen. The fun of it is trying to guess what crazy thing Portman's character will do next.

True Grit

Yay!!! Jeff Bridges again!!!

When I wasn't watching The Andy Griffith Show I was fleeing the room when my Dad would watch nothing but John Wayne movies. As a little girl, me no likey. There were some though that I tried my hardest to sit through...I have no idea if True Grit was one of them. So, I went into this new adaptation by the Coen brothers without knowing anything about the original. Most people who I've talked to that have seen the John Wayne version loved the new one...so that bodes well.

I loved True Grit. The end.

I kid, I kid!!! I mean really? When have the Coen's let us down people!? Well, I didn't care much for Burn After Reading, but you've got to leave room for a stinker here and there. Bridges, Matt Damon and new comer Hailee Steinfeld were all amazing in this film. Steinfeld especially blew me away with her natural flawless performance.

True Grit has a pretty basic plot, but the execution made it compelling to watch and the end of the movie is there before you know it. I know a lot of people shy away from Westerns, but in the recent years we've had some incredible examples (3:10 to Yuma, Hildago, There Will Be Blood). Yes, some may be remakes but that's just because the original stories are so good! Whether you're a die hard John Wayne fan or you have no knowledge of the original, True Grit is a must see film....the end.

Buffy Reloaded: The beginning of the end

It's official, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back to the big screen. That being said, I am not excited about it whatsoever. Just the fact that Joss Whedon will not be associated with it at all makes me cringe a bit. Let's beat this vampire thing to death shall we and destroy a franchise that I love shall we?

I blame Stephanie Meyers for this. If she hadn't brought her twisted fantasies to life, I am pretty sure this wouldn't be happening. Ok so maybe this would have been the eventual outcome but I just want to set Twilight on fire really. Come on let me have my fun! ***Update**** Looks like I wasn't the only one who was shocked and bummed about the news check out who else is! DAMN! We love you Joss and that's all I have left to say about that.

Ten Underrated Continued!!!

So, I'm back with the rest of the ten underrated movies!!! Whooooo....If you didn't catch the previous 5, then I suggest you go back a few posts to catch up on what's what. With that said I'll start back with...

#5 The Fall

The Fall was released in 2008 with a production budget of N/A according to Box Office Mojo...not helpful in this case...Anywho, I'm sure it cost more 3 million to make the film, but it only made about three and a half mil and that's worldwide. This film is directed by Tarsem Singh, better know for the film The Cell. You know, the really trippy movie were JLo rips Vincent D'Onofrio's nipple rings out...guuuuhhh.

The Fall is a much less cracked out movie (in my opinion), chock-full of beautiful scenery, costumes, and imagery. Lee Pace (Pushing Daises) plays the role of an injured stunt man in the 1920's. While trying to pass the time in the hospital he tells a story of 5 heroes to a fellow patient, who is one of the most convincing child actors I've ever seen. The line starts to blur between reality and imagination as the movie progresses creating some breathtaking scenes.

They're so cute in their matching costumes!!! ^.^

This was one of those films that I saw the trailer for and thought, "Wow, that looks like it could be amazing. Too bad my town will never get it in the theater." So, I patiently waited until it came out on DVD and I took the chance and just bought it without seeing it first...I was not let down.

#4 Frailty

Oh man...if you haven't seen this film, then you haven't fulfilled your duty to see one of the best thrillers out there. Frailty was released in 2001 as Bill Paxton's directorial debut (aside from a couple TV stuff) and he also stared in the film. It had a budget of 11 mil and made 13 mil domestically with 17 worldwide, so it didn't do too bad...at least it made some. Probably most of the dollars came from women hoping to see more of Matthew McConaughey without his shirt on. This, of course, was back when he didn't just make chick flicks with Kate Hudson.

Go away already!!!

Oh, thank God you're here Bill...much better.

To give you a gist of the plot...a man gives a FBI agent his story on how his religious bat shit crazy fanatic father had visions that lead to murders of people who he thought were demons...naturally. Basically, a dark interpretation of what Supernatural could have turned into. It's a really amazing spooky film and I'm amazed that Paxton hasn't done much else in the way of directing.

#3 Brotherhood Of The Wolf

This French made film was released in 2002 with a budget of 29 million. Domestically it earned a little over 11 mil...good thing the foreign sales were 59 mil!!! Yet another film that I'm sure was look over by many because they had to read during it. You know what I have to say to that?

Swift kick to the FACE!!!!

You're missing some AMAZING movies people!!! Brotherhood of the Wolf being just one great example. I mean, you've got Vincent Cassell, Monica (it's hard not to stare at your boobs) Bellucci, and wait for it.... Mark (your secret ingredient is KUMQUATS!!!) Dacascos kicking ass and taking names. The cinematography is beautiful and the action scenes don't falter...not when you have a samurai. If I can remember right some of the scenes with the "beast" were a little wonky but it never took away from the rest of the film.

To this day I'm still trying to find a good copy with great extras on it...the American release was crap, look for the Canadian one if you want to go all hard core on it, and you know you do.

#2 Moon

Holy crap we're on #2!!!!

Released in 2009 Moon worldwide it made about 9 mil...and once again Box Office Mojo doesn't give a budget. Bad Mojo bad!!! This is another movie that I saw the trailer for and thought, "Oh well, guess I'll be waiting on the DVD release of that one!" Although I still think it would have looked amazing on the big screen, the wait was worth it. Moon is one of those films that sticks with you for days, you can't shake it lose.

Sam Rockwell is one of the main reasons why I wanted to see this film, and he's really what made it compelling. Along with his computer GERTY voiced by Kevin Spacey he's nearing his three year stay on the moon when things start to get...weird.

Dude, you don't look so hot.

Since Rockwell goes through the majority of the movie by himself...more or less, the viewer gets an overwhelming feeling of how it would feel to be alone...on the freakin' moon. The tone of the film is spot on, and for what I think was a fairly small budget they did an incredible job with the effects. If you haven't seen Moon then you really need to do yourself a favor and rent it, borrow it, buy it!!!

#1 Sunshine

TAHDAHHHHH!!!!!

We go from the moon to the sun...truly did not plan that.

Directed by Danny Boyle, also know for Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, this film (released in 2007), much like Moon, makes you want to stay as far away from the sun and space for that matter. With a budget of N/A. DAMN IT MOJO!!!!! sigh...whatever. Sunshine made only 3 mil domestically and 28 mil in foreign sales. That's a huge leap people.

Alright, let me break it down for you peeps: A team of scientists, 50 years in the future, are sent to re-ignite a dying sun. Pretty intriguing story to begin with, right? You've got actors like Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, and Mark Strong.

I really hope he put some sunscreen on.

This was a film that even flew under my radar for awhile. It was some bored filled day that I found it on Netflix and was immediately pulled towards it. "Cillian Murphy movie that I haven't seen?! Whaaaaaaaat is this!!!??? Danny Boyle too!? Give me, give me, give ME!!! After all, 28 Days Later is not only one of my favorite horror movies, but it has zombies in it. Really fast ones.

With an amazing cast and visuals like this one above as the backdrop, you've already got the making of a film that demands attention. Let me just say that the ending sequence of the movie was filmed like nothing I'd ever seen before. If you have found yourself enjoying any of Danny Boyle's previous films, then you should not hesitate to check out Sunshine. I mean with images like this:

There's really no reason you all should check this film out...unless you have something against awesomeness. This is one that I do not own and it saddens me to no end...Holidays are coming people, you now know what I'm looking for.

Darth Vader Vs Adolf Hitler

Under normal circumstances this type of thing is exactly what I would be making fun of because its ridiculous to sit around and have this much free time on your hands to see who is the bigger baddie, Darth Vader or Hitler. That being said, this video is pretty hilarious and this guy is rather witty. It made me smile and hopefully it will do the same for you!

Ten Underrated Films

Alright, before the haters start hatin'....this is not a "Top Ten" list of the most underrated films. This is just simply a list of ten films that I don't think got their due. You know the films that fly under the radar. Or maybe even ones that didn't slip out of notice, it just maybe didn't get the welcomed attention it deserved or it came out at a bad time. Because of the beefiness of this post you're getting 5 of the films now and 5 later this week...that's right, I'm making you wait!!!
I basically started thinking about this post when I bought Robin Hood (the Ridley Scott version) the other day...so alright, I'll start with that one:

#10 Robin Hood

Like I said, I just bought it on glorious Blu-ray the other day. I saw this film, if I can remember right, on opening day...I'm a bit of a sucker for Robin Hood stuff, what can I say. I recall leaving the theater rather pleased, because I didn't really go in with high hopes or really any pre-conceived notion. I knew that Ridley Scott had directed it, which I've liked about half of his work: American Gangster, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven was almost there, but it was missing something...and did you know he directed G.I. Jane??? Weird right? Anywho, I really liked the film, but it didn't do so great in theaters. With a budget of 200 million, it only grossed slightly over 100 million, domestically and 300 mil worldwide....not good.

Now you've pissed him off...great.

After watching it again the other day, I still stand by my initial reaction...maybe liked it even more this time around. I watched the directors cut, which made it about two and a half hours. It mainly gave us a deeper look at Marion Loxley and how she was actually helping out the orphaned boys of Nottingham, which makes more since out of why they end up helping fight the good fight in the end.

Another thing about this film are the costumes. I'm not sure if the high def brought more attention to them, but the detail was AMAZING...nuff said. I've heard a lot of people describe this film by saying, "Oh, you mean the Gladiator/Robin Hood?" And really all I can say to that is...yes, it's the same director, main actor and same music composer (for every other Ridley Scott film), but really that's where the comparisons stop.

Overall, the story is told well, you've got incredible actors telling said story (i.e. Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, and William Hurt), and the cinematography fits nicely with the landscape. It's a fresh telling of Robin Hood's beginnings...what more do I need to say? Did I mention Mark Strong is in it?

Sigh...

#9 In Dreams

Ahhh...1999 was the year this little gem came out...basically right before Robert Downey Jr. dropped out of site for the better part of this past decade (lets hope he never leaves us again!)....love you...Where was I? Right, In Dreams is a drama/thriller staring Annette Bening, Robert Downey Jr. and Aidan Quinn. It had a budget of 30 mil, but only made a little over 12 mil...ouch.

To sum it up super quick: RDJ playing a crazed child killer and Annette Bening's character finds that their minds are connected through her dreams, so she's desperately trying to stop him the whole movie...too bad her husband played by Aidan thinks she's cra-cra. It sounds kinda dumb I know, but it's really not!!! Trust me, this is one of those forgotten late 90's films that's pretty cool, and it's got RDJ as a psycho, which personally I would like to see again.

#8 Constantine

Alright, I know this film is not cinema's finest piece...but damn it, I love this movie. Constantine was released in 2005 staring Keanu (I always seem sad now) Reeves, Rachel (hope she's in the next batman film) Weisz, and Shia (I haven't liked you since Holes) LaBeouf. With a budget of 100 mil it grossed domestically nearly 76 mil, but worldwide was 230 mil...so that's a little better.

Cheer up buddy!!!...what's on your head?

Constantine is based off of DC/Vertigo comic book called Hellblazer about a supernatural detective who has been to hell and back...literally. I'm not a reader of the comic, but it doesn't seem like the movie really strayed away from the initial content. The graphics and characters are pretty wicked (in a good way) and the action is fast-paced. When you boil it down, it's a really fun flick and it's one of those that I will always stop to watch. I'm not sure why people didn't latch on to it...hell, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has grossed over 800 mil worldwide...800 MILLION for that piece of shit film...that's right Shia, you make Keanu sad with those numbers.

Really...look at the guy.

#7 Kung Fu Hustle

This film did it's money making the good o' fashion foreign way. In foreign sales Kung Fu Hustle made over 83 mil, but in domestic it only made 17 mil, making the worldwide a little over 100. Pretty good for a 20 mil budget. Most people I've encountered don't remember this film unfortunately...even though it was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and overall it's won 19 awards with 32 nominations. Pretty frakkin' good for a film that I bet most would complain that you have to read during, you know who you are.

Kung Fu Hustle is a Chinese film that takes place in the 1940's and follows a wannabe gangster trying to get in with the "Axe Gang". The bulk of the film centers around the tenants of an apartment complex who must defend their territory, and they basically do it with some kick ass powers. If you are looking for something lighthearted, genuinely hilarious, and with a lot of sweet Kung Fu action, then please do not hesitate to check out Kung Fu Hustle.

#6 The Fountain

This be teh last one of teh group fer now...so listen up real good mates...not sure what that's supposed to sound like :) Moving on!

The Fountain is a breathtakingly vibrant film staring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz and directed by Darren Aronofsky. That's right, the guy directing the next Wolverine film. So if you're curious about his previous films, this is a really good one to start off with. The Fountain was released in 2006 with a 35 million budget, sadly it only made 15 mil WORLDWIDE...bring out sad Keanu again...wait, I've got one better.

This face should never be allowed to look so sad.

Instead of trying to describe this film, I'm taking the description straight from IMDB.com: Spanning over one thousand years, and three parallel stories, The Fountain is a story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world. See, there's no way I could explain it better. It may make you feel like you should drop some acid before watching this film, but it's just as amazing sober.

Video Game Review: Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock

So, as I am the big gamer amongst the Fangirls, I decided to take on writing up reviews here and there as I play and beat games! For my first review, I'll throw out a game I beat about...10 minutes ago.

The newest installment of the Guitar Hero series that first popped up 5 years ago, GH Warriors of Rock takes a turn away from it's usual "take your band on tour and play setlists to become famous and junk". Instead, it's Quest Mode has a bit more of a story to it. You have to go around and recruit eight characters to free the Demigod of Rock from enslavement and defeat what is called The Beast. Each character you recruit has a unique power that alters how the game is played, slightly (i.e. getting star power quicker, using note streaks to earn stars, etc.). The Quest Mode is narrated by...wait for it... Gene Simmons from KISS. =^.^=

As you go through and play songs to recruit everyone, you unlock their "true warrior forms" by getting a set amount of stars from playing the songs. This doubles their special power, and causes them to change their appearance to some sort of inhuman form. For instance... To the right is a picture of Judy Nails in her warrior form, as an imp.

Once you go through and get every character, they all join together for the final battle against The Beast. You play 3 Megadeath songs here, one of which that was written and performed specifically for the game, to "challenge players". I can safely say...they succeeded. It was rough, haha.

My favorite part about the game happens halfway through the Quest. You play a set to retrieve the Legendary Guitar - the only one that can defeat The Beast. This is done by playing the entire 2112 suite by Rush, complete with the members of the band narrating and everything. I was all a giggle while I played through the seven sections. The stages you play on were even animated with Rush aspects. The best of which is below. :-D

My biggest complaint about the game lies in the gameplay mechanics. It feels like it goes along well for a while, but as you progress, the difficulty curve jumps drastically. By the end of it, even though I could still pass pretty much every song, it got more frustrating to do so. This complaint may sound like it's just coming from a girl who can't destroy every song on Expert, and sure, I can't do that, but... for those like me who can't, it starts to take away from the enjoyment of the game. As more of the games have come out, Neversoft has seemed to put their focus towards gamers who can play at higher difficulties and want to still be challenged as each new one is released. I also seemed to have consistent issues activating Star Power. I would have to put the guitar almost straight up, making it harder to play, and hold it for a few seconds before it would register. Whether that had to do with my guitar or not I don't know for sure, but yeah.

One improvement I was pretty stoked about was the singer animation. Their mouths are amazing. It actually does look like they're singing!! After all, in the past... the mouths would just open up and down all awkwardly and robotic.

The setlist is pretty great. It's got songs like Weidmann's Heil by Rammstein, Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (complete with the band acting JUST like Queen does in the music video, watch for giggles!), Losing My Religion by R.E.M., Uprising by Muse, and even The Ramones doing the Spiderman theme.

And lastly, it has good replay value. I'm not talking about the typical GH replay value where you hop into Quickplay and just play your 6 favorite songs on the disc or anything. When you beat the Quest it, in a way, starts itself over, allowing you to replay every character, get more stars, and power them up even more. It gives you another goal. Big thumbs up there.

Overall, it's a solid game. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would give it...a 7 or 8 out of 10.

Dollhouse Returns!

Sadly, not to the small screen but Dark Horse will be adding this title to it's collection. For all of you living under a rock, they also publish Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The comic is set to come out the beginning of 2011 so get your squee's out now!!

I know we all love it when Whedon does a comic but since he is a little preoccupied with a certain Marvel movie, let's just say it rhymes with Smervenger, he has asked the people who wrote Dr. Horrible's sing a long to do the comic justice. I for one could not be more pleased with his choice since I loved the sing a long.

For those unfortunate enough to not have seen the show, this will be a potential ***SPOILER**** so I do apologize in advance. The end of Season 1 we see the future that has come from the Dollhouse organization and the comic will be taking off from episodes Epitaphs 1 & 2. The city has been over run with the mindless and violent "dolls" and this shows just how dangerous the Dollhouse technology can be if put in the wrong hands. Movie Review: Due Date

If you know anything about me you won't ask twice as to why I saw Due Date on opening night...for those of you who don't know me quite as well, I FRIGGIN' LOVE ROBERT DOWNEY JR.! Ever since I saw Chaplin, I just couldn't get enough of him...sigh. Now that I got that out of my system, I shall present you with my review of the movie.
For sanity purposes Due Date will be referred to as DD. Staring Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ, I'm all about making this quicker to type people) and the uncomfortably funny Zach Galifianakis, DD was directed by Todd Phillips who also directed side splitting movies like The Hangover and Old School. He was also behind the camera for Starsky and Hutch, but we'll try not to hold that against him. So the guy has had a few really hilarious films mixed in with some turds, one can only hope that DD would be the former.

Sexiness to the left!!!

If you haven't deciphered the trailer for the film the plot is as follows: RDJ's character is desperately trying to make his way from Georgia to LA for the birth of his child. Unfortunately his character runs into Zach Galifianakis' character early in the journey and well it only goes down hill from there...needless to say he hardly makes it there in one piece. Oh sorry...SPOILER!!! What, did you really thing he wouldn't make it?
Overall DD was pretty funny...not Hangover funny though. It had slapstick humor mixed with crude here and there, some drugs that one might need for glaucoma, a car chase, and an adorable dog. What more do you need!? The chemistry between RDJ and Galifianakis was there, but I think were the film falls short is the speed in which it was told. Mid way through the film you get that feeling like, "Okay, I get it! He hates the dog and hates the fact that he's having to ride with this weirdo across the country...oh look he's trying to abandon him, but he doesn't go through with it?! What a surprise." And why....why is Jamie Foxx in this movie for 10 mins? If you don't give the guy a kookie character to play he's more stale than yesterday's bread...nice waist of money!

I came out of the theater saying, "Yea, I enjoyed that." I think part of my enjoyment was purely who the two main characters were being played by. Sometimes you have to step back and assess the whole film, and ask yourself if you just enjoyed it because of the people who where the stars. I have done this and I can safely say that it was because of not only the actors but the script as well. The plot is nothing new...very Planes, Trains and Automobiles sans the trains part. All I can really say is if you find yourself in a conversation about The Office and you're the only one in the group saying, "I just can't watch it, Steve Carell's character makes me nervous...I don't find it funny." Then you're not going to like DD...Zach Galifianakis takes that feeling to a whole other level. But, if you love that type of humor and you love Todd Phillips films then I think you'll be just as pleased with Due Date.

Arkham Asylum 2: aka Arkham City

Hello Fangirl Confessional listeners!!! So while trolling the internet as I never do, I found some interesting information about a video game I am really looking forward to next year, Arkham City.

Gamesradar.com has a bunch of information on this game that I didn't know was out there and trust me they have the scoop! If you do not want to know anything about the upcoming game then I suggest you stop reading now and do not visit their website!

****SPOILERS****
One of the villains that are definately confirmed for the sequel is...wait for it...CATWOMAN!!!! She is all tied up to him in several pictures and I for one can not wait! That was one of the things I was disappointed in last go around was that they mentioned quite a few villains but you never got to interact with them. From what Gamesradar is reporting we will not have to worry about that! So here are a few pictures for you to enjoy and several sneak endings from the first ending, just in case you have only seen the Killer Croc one like I have. Don't forget to set the date, Arkham City is set to release Fall 2011.
